Take a tour of Rhine Tower in Düsseldorf, Germany — part of the World’s Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. The Rhine Tower in Dusseldorf, Germany was in fact recently constructed in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Along the shaft of the tower is a vertical series of lights which act as the world’s largest digital clock. The towers primary function is the aerial transmissions it sends via FM radio, Television, and directional radio. The top of the tower is encased with tilted glass windows, allowing visitors to take in the entirety of the surrounding cityscape. At a staggering height of 234 meters, this tower stands as the tallest construction in all of Dusseldorf The tower rotates 360 degrees every hour, for half the day it rotates one way and then changes direction for the remainder of the day.

Landmark Tower, a former bank building, had once been home to the largest digital clock west of the Mississippi. Now vacant for several years and damaged by a tornado, the decision was made to demolish it by implosion. Because of the threat of bad weather the schedule was moved ahead several minutes, so I barely had time to get my camera into position before the building came down. The overpass in the foreground is an Interstate Highway. I have often wondered if there might have been someone driving by who didn’t know what was going on, and what they might have thought. “Droning Bagpipes” was added on Oct. 13, 2008 using YouTube’s Audio Swap Feature.
