The motor of our battery operated wall clocks would die when it’s batteries goes dead. How can I prevent this?

The guy who fixes watches said this was because I use energizer batteries which has too much power for the motor. He suggested that using an ordinary alkaline battery would prolong the motor life, is this true? If so why?

How do I turn off the alarm function on the Avon Spafinder alarm clock?

I just received my Avon Spafinder alarm clock and am trying to find out how to turn the alarm function off when I don’t need it on weekends. The instructions are not very good. Also, does anybody know what the "reset" button is for? Again, it’s not mentioned in the instructions.

How can digital clocks count seconds?

Is there some kind of mechanism in digital alarm clocks, microwaves, digital timers, etc. that tells the device when a second/minute/etc. has passed? How in the world does this work?
I can’t say directly what happens in alarm clocks, but with computers they have clock chips which "click" thousands, millions and even billions of times [...]
